A web application runs on a server and is usually accessed by a browser, or a custom thin client on a client computer.
Building in this way can allow your application to run on many types of device without having to change the fundamental code of the application. It also allows an application that may be quite intensive to utilise the power of the server to execute allowing you to deploy relatively lightweight client devices.
However, you must be connected to the internet to use the application.
Many people use accounting software such as Sage One or Xero which are presented in this way.
Microsoft's SharePoint Server is an application that can be customised and extended to meet individual requirements.
